The English Table Tennis Cadet and Junior National Championships will be staged at Hertfordshire Sports Village this weekend.
More than 200 young players aged 11 to 17 from across England will be taking part following qualification at regional events where over 2,000 players took part.
In the region 35 Hertfordshire-based players will be taking part following qualification in both the boys’ and girls’ events.
Table tennis is one of the three top participation sports in the world with more than 205 counties affiliated to the international body and 300 million participants worldwide.
In England table tennis continues to grow as reported in the Government’s Adult Active Peoples Survey and is one of five sports which have significantly increased participation over the last three years.
A recent government survey also showed nearly 300,000 young people aged 11 to 15 participated regularly outside of school.
One player set to play in Herts at the weekend is 18-year-old Liam Pitchford.
He played in the World Junior Championships in Bahrain and has participated in these championships previously since he was 10.
At the recent Senior European Championships Liam beat the number 8 and 20 ranked players in the world.
