HTAP athlete Tom Lewis, from Welwyn Garden City made history yesterday with a stunning round of 65 to beat the lowest score by an amateur at The Open which was previously held by Tiger Woods and Justin Rose.
He shared the first round lead with Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn after one of the most entertaining opening days in the tournament’s long history.
Lewis, who is named after his playing partner yesterday, Tom Watson, also includes the former world No.1 Woods and Rory McIlroy among his idols and is the first amateur to take a share of the first round lead at The Open since Michael Bonallack back in 1968.
Tom has received support from Hertfordshire Sports Village as part of the Hertfordshire Talented Athlete Programme (HTAP). He has received Strength and Conditioning and Physiotherapy support from Performance Hertfordshire and Bodybalance Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic and free use of the gym at the Sports Village. This support has coincided with his meteoric rise up the golfing amateur ranks.
