Junior climber Buster Martin got the chance to promote his passion to key Olympic figures last week after being picked to represent his sport at a House of Commons event.
The 15-year old Stanborough pupil was an enthusiastic ambassador for climbing as he met double Olympic gold medal winner Dame Kelly Holmes and Olympics minister Hugh Robertson – both keen climbers.
The Westminster event was organised by the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) to let MPs and sports bodies and sponsors know about the fast growth of competition climbing and the increasing success of the GB team.
Climbing is one of the favourites to be the ‘new’ Olympic sport in 2020 and Buster and his team mates spoke about their and the BMC’s part in the global campaign to win Olympic recognition.
Buster, who has featured regularly in the Welwyn Hatfield Times's sports pages, began climbing four years ago here at the Sports Village and, after his first international season this year, has a European ranking of 17th and a world ranking of 25th. In outdoor climbing he is the UK’s third ranked among the under-20 group.
