HSV is delighted to be running the NPLQ Trainer Assessor (NPLQTA) course, a nationally recognised Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) qualification that helps experienced life-saving professionals take the next step into training and assessing. The course is designed for experienced individuals ready to move into training and assessing roles. Suitable candidates include First Aiders, Pool Lifeguards, Open Water Lifeguards, Beach Lifeguards, Swimming Teachers with the National Rescue Award, and Pool Responders with ER Pool.
Trainer Assessors (TAs) play a vital role in keeping our pools and other water setting environments safe – they are responsible for delivering and assessing important lifesaving qualifications, including the well-known National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) (the benchmark award for professional pool lifeguards across the UK). By delivering this course, HSV is not only supporting career development within the leisure industry, but also helping to strengthen the quality and consistency of lifeguard training nationally.
Throughout the programme, candidates develop the skills needed to plan, deliver and assess RLSS UK qualifications to national standards. The training focuses on professionalism, communication and assessment best practice to ensure Trainer Assessors can confidently support and evaluate the next generation of lifesavers.
At HSV, the programme includes four key modules:
- Train the Trainer – 1 day
- Train the Assessor – 1 day
- CPR and AED – 1 day
- Qualification Specialism – 2 days
Once completed, successful candidates qualify as Probationary RLSS UK Trainer Assessors for AED and their chosen discipline. They then complete a supported probationary period of up to two years, guided by an experienced National Trainer Assessor or Mentor. This structured pathway ensures high standards are maintained while new Trainer Assessors build confidence and experience.
To enrol on the course, candidates must:
- Be 18 years of age or over,
- Be a member of the Royal Life Saving Society UK (Licence to Operator Membership), and
- Hold a current and full qualification in the discipline they wish to assess (for example, a valid NPLQ for those training as NPLQTA)
By hosting the NPLQTA course, HSV continues to demonstrate its commitment to professional excellence, workforce development and public safety. Well-trained TAs lead to highly competent lifeguards - and that makes a real difference in keeping swimmers safe.
